HEAVY snow caused chaos across Britain last night as some airports were forced to close.
Gatwick Airport and London City Airport were both shut for part of the evening while their runways were de-iced. Heavy snow forced Stansted Airport to close its runway at 10:30pm. A total of 23 flights were cancelled and 18 diverted from Gatwick
as a result of the weather, affecting five BA and EasyJet flights landing at Glasgow and Edinburgh airports last night. Flights to London City Airport were diverted to Heathrow and Luton. A number of train services linking London and the south coast were also delayed or cancelled as snow drifted on to the tracks. A junction of the London-bound M20 in Kent was temporarily shut because of the treacherous conditions. An army of snow ploughs and gritters were on standby as much of the UK prepared to be engulfed by "significant and disruptive" snowfall.
